Department of Botany was established in the year 1954 for the intermediate. B.Sc. Botany degree course was introduced during 1956-57 period. The department has well equipped laboratories and ICT enabled spacious class rooms. An academic record with excellent pass out percentage and job placement in government and private sectors, since the inception of the B.Sc Botany course in the college has attracted students to take up this subject after Higher secondary course. The department has conducted several exhibitions in the past to cater to the need of both public and students. This department, in association with local self government institutions and NGOs, now has evolved to address several environmental issues of local communities. Constant interaction with society by conducting programmes like training on mushroom cultivation, vermicompost production, soap making, organic farming, etc has always been a priority. The department has conducted several seminars at national level with eminent speakers from various Research Institutes to expose students, researchers and faculty to the new developments in the plant science . Currently the department has four permanent faculty members actively engaged in diverse research fields such as, Plant systematics, Fungal taxonomy, Lichenology and Plant Physiology. The department has a modest collection of about 2000 books in addition to periodicals and journals. The department is actively engaged in consultancy service like Mushroom cultivation, Mushroom and Lichen identification, etc.
