About The Department

The Department of Physics was started in 1947. The B.Sc. Physics course in the
Department was started in 1957 and the first B.Sc. Physics Batch of students passed out in
1960.During the last 55 years, a large number of students have passed out from the Department
and has served and continues to serve the society and nation in different positions.

Courses offered

The Department of Physics offers B.Sc. Degree Programme in Physics with
Physics as the Core course and with Mathematics and Chemistry as Complementary courses. The
Department also handles the Complementary course in Physics for students studying under B.Sc.
Programme in Mathematics and the B.Sc. Programme in Chemistry. The Department offers a
course in Amateur Astronomy and Astrophysics as Open course for students of other
Departments as elective during their fifth semester.

Research Projects

Minor research project sponsored by UGC, entitled ‘Investigation of the Coupling between
Equatorial Ionosphere and Solar Wind’ with Sri. Vijayakrishnan M.V. as the Principal CoOrdinator; 2011-2013, Sanctioned Amount – Rs. 30000/-; Status – Completed.

Facilities

The Department has sufficient number of classrooms, a smart classroom, a computer lab for
programming related practicals and a fully equipped lab. The lab is spacious and well
maintained, with two lab attenders. There is a general lab as well as an optics lab, with
sophisticated instrumentation. The lab also has modern instruments for use for students in
carrying out project work in connection with their syllabus. The instruments are always updated
with changes in syllabus and new and modern instruments are procured through annual purchase
available through funds mainly from the Plan fund of the Government. The faculty of the
Department also has several extension and consultation activities. Some guide Postgraduate
students from other institutes in carrying out their Masters Project work. The Department lab
houses a Newtonian type reflecting telescope and Night sky watching sessions are carried out
every year for the benefit of students. The telescope is also used for use in nearby Schools in
connection with special astronomical events like eclipses.

Outcomes

The Department has a consistent record for high success percentage of outgoing students. Most
students passing out every year opt for Masters courses and many are able to obtain seats in
prestigious institutes both within and outside the State.
