About The Department
Botany department was established in 1954 for the intermediate and B.Sc. degree course was introduced in 1956-57.The department has well equipped laboratory and theory class rooms. Many renowned personalities were worked as the head of the department in the earlier years. Students scored high marks in their university examinations during the past 60 years. The department used to conduct exhibitions frequently on plants of medicinal importance, aquatic angiosperms and plants of special interest. The department is evolved to address several environmental issues of local communities in association with local self government institutions and NGOs. The department is actively interacting with society by participating various woman empowerment programme by giving training on mushroom cultivation, vermicompost production, soap making, organic farming, etc. The department has repository of indigenous knowledge of the local community and medicinal plants. The department had conducted many seminars at national level with eminent invited speakers from various Research Institutes to get exposure to students at research level. In spite of that department occasionally invites eminent faculties from outside the college to deliver lectures on current aspects of botanical/environmental interest. Currently the department has four faculty members actively engaged in diverse research fields such as, mycology, biotechnology, physiology, ethnobotany, taxonomy, lichenology, pteridology, orchidology, etc. The department is provided with a library with about 2000 books with periodicals and scientific journals. The department is actively engaged in consultancy service in Mushroom cultivation, Vegetable gardening, Biodiversity studies, Identification of plant samples such as angiosperms, mushrooms, lichens, pteridophytes, etc.
