About The Department

The Department of Economics was established during 11th August 1947 with the establishment of Chittur Govt. College at Victoria Girls high school building. One of the oldest and conventional courses: B.A Economics was started with a sanctioned strength of 50 students with Indian Constitution and Politics and Indian History as the subsidiaries. Economics is one of the most demanded arts subject having with a great employability and future career prospects, which has been proved by the increasing receipt of application for the course.

Inorder to cater to the needs of increasing demand for the post graduation in Economics, the Department of Economics initiated an effort to bring the same and it was fulfilled with the help of the MLA Sri. K Achuthan of Chittur constituency with a sanctioned strength of 20 students on August 2012 and I st MA Economics batch was started on November 10,2012. The first batch came out with flying colours with cent percent results bagging 4 distction, and 15 first class. Two of the students of the initial batch cleared their UGC – NET during their course and 4 of them cleared SET. Even the second batch passed out with cent percent results and 2 students clearing their UGC – NET.

From the beginning itself the department developed its full swing. Under the Headship of different eminent faculties as HOD’S namely :,Prof.K.C.Kunchikrishnan, Prof.P.A.Vasudevan, prof.K.J.Andrew, Prof.P.S.Laila, prof. Bhrihaspathi, Prof. Koshi.P.Mathew, Prof. RajanVarghes, Sri. K.Sebastian, Smt. Radha Kumari, Smt. Mariasusani and Smt. E.K.Thara.

Currently department has a sanctioned strength of 8 faculties ( 5 doctorate and 2 pursuing their Ph. D) with 243 studends including 3 UTL students. 

The department has a well equipped library with 2403 rare collection of classical books and a subscription of 13 journals and magazines both national and international which would enable the learning requirements of the students and faculty. A well equipped Department lab is set with 8 computers with internet connections and is made available to the students. Department has an active Alumnae representation with a Executive committee and advisory body who actively participate in all developmental ventures of the Department .The department have a good stock of students wealth ,many of them reached the peak of famous position, notable among them are, Palakkad EX-MP N.N.Krishnadas, MLA.Chenthamarakshan, SujathaJayaraj,The Divisional Manager of Chennai Railway.

Being Second in student intake, Department has strived to attain good results and achieved the same with the dedicated and hardworking faculties.

Departmental Library & Journals

The Department possess a good library with 2403 valuable books including classical collections. The library resources would have been catering the learning requirement of all students and teachers. They can be provided the facility to refer the books without any restriction, the book issue system based on rotation. The final year students have been giving the priority for book issue that is for an academic year base. There are reading materials like national and international journals, magazines and news papers. From the feedback of the students it is known that our library management system is an efficient one. Not only our students but other department students and teachers are also approaching our library for reference. We have a computerized catalogue of library books which includes some classical and old valuable works. 12 journals covering national, regional and international arenas has been subscribed by the department library

COMPUTER LAB

A well furnished department lab with 6 computers with internet connections, printer and scanner facilities since 2009.This caters the needs of the students. Practical sessions are provided for the UG and the PG students to make familiar to work with it environment. The project work s of the UG and PG is carried out in the computer lab. Lab is opened for the students from 9.30 to 4.30 they make use of their free time resourcefully. The students can access all type of information like scholarship, university information – exam registration, fee payment, time table, exam results and other university news. Even they can enable the net facilities for the online registration of all job oriented exams – like UGC NET Exam, PSC, Bank Test, IAS, IES, other private sector jobs.

  • ICT Oriented Teaching

Students seminars and assignments are prepared using internet facilities as they are presented using power point presentations.

  • Project Work

Individual projects are assigned to the UG and PG students and the same are done using the resources available in our computer lab and the typing data entry and analysis are done by the students individually. We ensure that each student complete their course with a basic computer practical literacy which help to fetch a upper hand in the job market.

All these enable them to come up with good results, communication skill, and presentation skill and even to come up with flying colours in different competitive exams.

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES / FACILITIES

  • DEPARTMENTTAL MEETING – After every council meeting, department constitute a department council meeting for the discussion of the council decisions . Actions are undertaken on the basis of these meetings . A record of the minutes comprising agenda , members present and the decision taken are strictly maintained. The minutes of the council meeting is properly filed and each faculties are made to read and duely sign the same
  • TUTORIAL WORK – 4 hours per week is assigned for the tutorial work. Each tutor is assigned the duty and it is done uniformily in entire college on Wednesday and three hours of the same is engaged by the department on their convenience after class hours. Tutorials  book is maintained and the classes are engaged on the basis of the different activities provided in it  along with the additional sessions. The report is submitted to the college convenor on monthly basis.
  • REMEDIAL CLASSES – A remedial coaching for those students who fall in the grade Below C is given a special remedial coaching to attain a higher grade and better performance.
  • BOOK BANK FACILITY – A collection of the complimentary copies provided by different publishing houses, books donated by passout students and books donated by faculties in the department are being provided in the library in a separate head. The needy are issued books and are allowed to keep with themselves till the completion of course as there own copy.

  • SICKROOM – As in the proportion of the student intake, in the department female student outnumber the male intake. Considering the same, department maintain a separate room in any cases of emergency situation for their personal care. There are be given awareness  regarding all the health and hygienic facility to be considered and practiced.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

  • “VEETILORU THOTTAM”: An organic farming initiative has been undertaken by the department to  develop  organic farms in100 households  of the students
  • “NEERU:ON THE VERGE OF TRUTH”: A documentary visualing the reasons behind the increasing f infant mortality among tribes in Attappady
  • Free NET/SET coaching: Classes were conducted for the outside PG students who has been preparing for NET Examination for past 2 years.
  • “Oikonomia”: An intercollegiate quiz programme has been conducted in which 10 colleges has been participated.
  • NEERKAZCHA: “Beyond the Complexion” a documentary film is under progress with the assistance of government of Kerala Tribal Department and directorate of collegiate department
  • UNARVU 2016: “ A helping hand for Attappadi tribal anganwadi students ansd their parents”.
  • “CAMPUSIL ORU THOTTAM”: A Go Green initiative has been undertaken by the  department to  build up a   Green Campus
  • SOCIO-ECONOMIC”, A Study on the Impact of Pandemic in Different Socio-Economic Sectors highlighting the impact.
  • FURITS GARDEN 2020 As part of go green initiatives of the department, we planted various fruit tree in the new academic block.  Our students actively  took part in this  This programme enable to cultivate the habit of spending time productively among students.
  • KAUSHAL 2021, Department of Economics organized EARN WHILE YOU LEARN initiative  with the objective of  showcasing the skill of our students by providing a platform.
  • To provide practical experience to students, the department decided to have a tie up with panchayat to prepare proposal, report, analyzing the data collected by them.

GCC Economics Alumni Get-together

Re union day of old students of 1971 Batch of B A Economics in Govt .College , Chitoor was celebrated at the College Auditorium on 12 th December 2022.This was the 51 st year ( Golden jubilee) re union .College Vice Principal and Head Of Economics Dept Ms Baby inaugurated the function by lighting the Kuthuvelakku and presided over the event .She delivered an excellent speech and gave a complete picture of present day status of Economics dept and up dated .Our Golden Re union celeberation was well attended by number of old students from various walks of life and have reached GCC from different states and towns. We have exchanged our past experiences of our academic life and enjoyed with some entertainment program.We have also given some donation to GCC Alumni Assn.for distributing among deserving poor students. Our group photo is attached .
