NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an India Government sponsored public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Mahatma Gandhi‘s centenary year in 1969. The primary objective of NSS is developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service. ‘Education through Service’ is the purpose of the NSS. The ideological orientation of the NSS is inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.

SYMBOL
The Symbol is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. The Konark wheel in the NSS badge having 8 bars signifies the 24 hours of a day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours. Red colour in the badge signifies energy and spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers.NSSBlue colour signifies the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.
The NSS Government College Chittur comprises two units, each with 100 volunteers. The Government College Chittur’s NSS unit seeks to develop each student’s whole personality in order to help them become responsible adults who uphold moral principles and lead fulfilling lives. The Government College Chittur NSS focused its efforts on helping the students realize the value of labour and instilling in them a sense of service and teamwork.
Currently, our college has two NSS units operating under the supervision of two program officers: Dr. Nishad K. M. and Dr. Rubeena A. The NSS unit observes and organizes various programs on all international and national importance days like Yoga Day, World Human Rights Day, Ozone Day, Environment Day, Blood Donation Day, Women’s Day, and so on.
The unit takes up various local, state, and central government’s social programs like planting trees, voter awareness and enrollment, the Swatchh Bharath campaign, blood donation camps, health checkups, and so on.
AIM OF NSS
Development of the Personality of Students through Community Service.
OBJECTIVES
(I) Understand the community in which they work.
(II) Understand themselves in relation to their community.
(III) Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in the problem-solving process.
(IV) Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;
(V) Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems.
(VI) Develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities.
(VII) Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
(VIII) Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
(IX) Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
(X) Practice national integration and social harmony.
